A catalogue of the books from the Grolier Club's Bruce Collection. George Bruce and his son David Wolfe Bruce had amassed one of the world's eminent collections on the history of printing and typography; a portion of thes were dontated to the Grolier Club in the 1890's and this catalogue is in recognition of this valuable gift. From the introduction: "The books described in the following catalogue are not merely examples of early bookmaking: many of them have an historic value, for they contain the first notices in print of the invention of typography." The catalogue is beautifully printed letterpress on handmade paper, in red and black inks. It has an elaborate title page with ornate initial cap and ornamental design which incorporates the Grolier Club device. In addition to the books there are various notes and translations concerning some of the works, printers and printing history in general. The book contains 25 facsimile reproductions of the most important passages from the actual pages of selected books from the collection that contain references to the invention and art of printing. They include references from: John Gutenberg, Peter Schoeffer, John Schoeffer, Ivo Schoeffer, Gunther Zainer, Anthony Koberger, Albert Durer, John Froben, Philip de Lignamine, Erhard Ratdolt, Philip Pigouchet, John Treschel, Wynkyn de Worde, and Berthold Ruppel. Complete with Bibliographical Index, Index to Printers, and indexed by List of Towns. Printed in an edition limited to 400. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the history of printing, early printed books and the art of the book.
