Frederick William Ashley
Washington: U.S. Govt print. off, 1932
First Edition
Narrative Description:
A remarkable production of the usually staid Government Printing Office. The Public Printer, George Henry Carter, was instrumental in bringing the Vollbehr collection of incunabula - including the St. Paul 42 line bible of Gutenberg - to the Library of Congress. This book contains the address by the Chief Assistant Library of the LOC, Frederick W. Ashley, in 1932. What is remarkable is that Carter has designed the text to resemble Gutenberg's Bible: text in 42 lines of Cloister Black, decorated caps in red and blue, etc. A beautiful production. Colophon: "Designed and printed by George Henry Carter...public printer of the United States of America... to the number of four hundred and twenty copies bound in parchment, impressed on handmade paper with Closter types in two columns of forty-two lines each and illuminated with handmade initial letters smiliar to the Gutenberg Bible in the Library of Congress...MCMXXXII. This copy is no 229."
