Narrative Description:
This manual of historical calligraphic styles has been admired by calligraphers, graphic designers and typophiles from its first publication in "Feder und Stichel" (German) in 1949. Zapf designed these 25 plates between 1939 and 1941. The renown punch cutter at Stempel, August Rosenberger, cut them into metal engraving plates during the air raids on Frankfurt. In addition to the use of the original plates, it contains a preface by Paul Standard and Zapf's appendix on The Historical Development of Occidental Letterforms (translated by Paul Standard). This book was printed at the private printing office of Stempel in Germany and is the first appearance in English of the Palatino type face.
