“Could That be a Treasure on Your Bookshelf?” Event at Weston
Library
The Weston Library will be hosting a “Could That be a Treasure on
Your Bookshelf?” event for books on April 4, 2004 from 2 - 5 p.m.
(The Library’s always got fun things going on for kids, this one
will be especially fun for the adults.)
If you have been wondering if that’s an old treasure on your bookshelf
bring it to the event, which will be held in the Library Community Room
at 56 Norfield Road. When you arrive get a number; once your number is
called you will have the opportunity to discuss your book with Brenda
and David, Weston residents who have recently launched their
own business, Carpe Libris, to buy and sell antiquarian, rare and other
interesting books.
There will be several interesting things to do while you are waiting:
- Meet with Deborah Evetts. She is a book conservator and binder
with a private practice based in Westport. Deborah’s experience includes
Head of Rare Book Conservation at the Pierpont Morgan Library. In addition
to rare books she has conservation experience with fine bindings, illuminated
manuscripts, incunabula, autograph letters, and early children’s
games. She will be available to answer any questions you may have on the
care, repair, and binding of your book. She’ll also be giving
out a pamphlet with tips on the preservation and care of books.
- Watch a letterpress demonstration. John Barrett, proprietor of
both Letterpress Services and Letterpress Things in Massachusetts
will be printing keepsakes for attendees, using handset type on
a portable antique
press. All books printed before the mid-1800’s and most modern
fine press books are printed letterpress so the ability to
identify bona fide
letterpress-printed items can be a valuable skill.
- See a display of letterpress books, which will include a set
of miniature books and the complete works of long-time Weston
resident Gerda
Da Rif.
- Have fun mixing with your neighbors and seeing what other people
bring.
- Test your Tag Sale skills. Take Brenda and David’s quiz
to see if you can consistently pick the most valuable book
from a set of pairs.
There will be prizes for the first 10 people who bring an outstanding
book so be sure to come early!
